Being from an Italian family, I have a bunch of family traditions that many people might consider unique. The people I was with and I regularly kiss each other hello and goodbye, a good amount of our arguments are not as intense as they seem and all of us are extremely dedicated to our family. Because of this familial dedication, all of us visit our Grandparents regularly once a year back in the old country. I must say, besides the fact that Italy is a remarkable country, I enjoy their dwelling immensely. They have a beautiful old-world estate. This old-world estate is not exactly a stylistic choice; it’s just simply an “old-world estate”. The old-world estate aesthetic is rather popular in the US- certainly New England. I have to say though, while those old-world estates are absolutely beautiful, they don’t come anywhere close to the authentic thing. My Grandparents’ Tuscan dwelling is full of character and history. I recognize the concern with people appropriating old-world estates with Tuscan furniture is that it loses the authenticity that makes it entirely special to begin with. I guess this might seem a little preachy—and I don’t mean to come off that way—however when people who aren’t Italian try to take the Tuscan furniture and old-world estate aesthetic to posture with the appearance of antiquity it comes off as completely disingenuous. Again, I don’t recognize that people who prefer the old-world style are disingenuous. That’s not what I’m saying here. What I am saying is that the companies who attempt to profit off of the old-world estate by making low cost knock-offs are certainly very missing the entire point of an old-world estate to begin with.
