Being from an Italian family, I have a lot of family traditions that many might consider unique.
We always kiss each other hello and goodbye, many of our arguments are not as intense as they seem and we are very dedicated to our family.
Because of this familial dedication, we visit my grandparents once a year back in the old country. I have to say, besides the fact that Italy is a beautiful country, I love their home. They have a beautiful old-world estate. This old-world estate is not a stylistic choice; it’s just simply an “old-world estate”. The old-world estate aesthetic is very popular in the United States- particularly New England. I have to say though, while those old-world estates are beautiful, they don’t come anywhere close to the real thing. My grandparent’s Tuscan home is full of character and history. I think the problem with people appropriating old-world estates with Tuscan furniture is that it loses the authenticity that makes it special in the first place. I know this might seem a little preachy- and I don’t mean to come off that way- but when people who aren’t Italian try to take the Tuscan furniture and old-world estate aesthetic to posture with the appearance of antiquity it comes off as extremely disingenuous. Again, I don’t think that people who enjoy the old-world style are disingenuous. That’s not what I’m saying at all. What I am saying is that the companies who try to profit off of the old-world estate by making cheap knock-offs are really missing the entire point of an old-world estate to begin with.
